Windows won't start "because the folloowing file is missing or corrupt:
HAL.DLL"
I get the above error message when trying to boot a computer that's been
working fine for 9 months.
The above error message says to re-install a copy of the above file. I
could not figure out how to reinstall HAL.DLL
so... I thought I'd check a few things and ran my Windows XP Home Edition
SP2 disc in repair mode.
I ran:
1. CHKDSK /R - this said "The volume appears to contain one or more
unrecoverable errors"
2. FIXMBR - this said " this computer appears to hage a non-standard or
invalid master boot record. FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you
proceed. This could cause all the partitions on the current hard drive to
become inaccessible. Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?"
I did not say "yes".
What do I do to get this XP system drive operational again?
