Started my system and Windows XP Home does not recognize
the already installed DVD or CD-RW drives. They were
available and working yesterday. The only change in the
system was a couple of Windows updates and the Office SP1
Update were installed. They are not shown in the Device
Manager. I checked the connectors internally and
everybody is snug. What could this be and how can I
reinstall them?

you could try system restore, check for viruses. If you
can get on the internet, try to download the drivers for
the drives from your computer's web site or the drives'
manufacturers and reinstall them from there. Or, try to
reinstall them from the device manager. If your drives
don't work, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use the
disks that came with your computer. If you have
restoration disks, that is where the drivers would be.
The same thing happened to a friend's computer and he
even had the Dell technician at his house. It ended up
that I had to reformat his hard drive and do a clean
install of windows. He may have had a virus(he didn't
realize that the virus protection that came with his
computer expired after 30 days).
Hope this helps.

This is not that uncommon,It happened to me and a simple
reboot was all that it took if that doesnt work try this
registry edit.

One more thing, this is why you should only install one
windows update at a time,at least you would know which
one caused this.
