WinXP to Vista Upgrade

I am upgrading from XP to Vista (on the way to Windows 7). After it
completes the compatibility check it starts to copy files. About 20 minutes
into the process the upgrade aborts with the following message:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation
cannot proceed."

Any ideas of what the problem might be and how to fix it?

Upgrades are not updates. ;-)

Check in a WIndows Vista newsgroup.

Personal opinion - stay XP.

Yep. My bad. Thought I was in WindowsUpdate.

So the OP should give some details.

Windows XP _______ Edition with Service Pack _?

Windows Vista _______ Edition is what is trying to be upgraded to?

Is AntiVirus software installed still? (My recommendation is to disconnect
from the internet and uninstall AntiVirus software, any third party
firewalls and any active antimalware software before attempting the
upgrade.)

Amount of free space on the system drive (usually C:\)?

Amount of system RAM (memory)?

Type of processor (*how many cores?)

Make/model of video device? Any 'control' software for said video device
installed? (My recommendation - drivers only - no extra software like
Catalyst for ATI, etc.)

Last time you did a full CHKDSK?

Last time you defragmented?

Is there anything - AFAYK - wrong with the current system or is it clean and
fully functional?

24 hours after the original posting. Either the OP figured it out or is
distracted by other things. ;-)
 
I am going from Windows XP Media Center Edition to Windows Vista Version 2.
I successfully did the upgrade on an identical computer (HP Pavilion a1340n).
Both have the same security software installed (Norton Internet Security)
and the first upgrade was successful without uninstalling the security
software. The only difference is that the computer that I successfully
upgraded had only a single user. The computer on which the upgrade failed
had three users. Thinking that might be the problem I deleted two of the
user accounts - the upgrade still failed.

I have about 80% unused space on the system drive. I run chkdsk regularly
and defragment regularly. The processor is a dual-core Intel Pentium 4 3.20
GHz and I have 2 MB of memory. The current operating system is clean and
functional. The video device is ATI Radeon Express Series 200.

The upgrade fails during the "expanding files" portion.
