Hi there everyone,

I have a recently factory installed WinXP laptop (Dell Inp 8600).

After a couple of days, after booting, the System Idel Process idled at 99%.

I have run MacaFee and NIA's Stinger but they don't shed any light, so I am
starting to think that it is not a virus problem.

XP has been patches as much as possible (WIndows Update), along with the
other apps, such as Office 2000.

Anyone know where I could start looking?

Cheers,
Zii.

Try a dictionary and look up the meaning of "idle".

Greetings --

Looking for what, precisely?

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. ;-}
The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has *nothing* to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

So when the CPU usage is at 99% and in System processes it shows that 99% is
under System Idle and you can't do anything because the system is running so
slow, then what is the problem? It is obviously doing something because you
can't do a thing while it's "idling". I know it doesn't make sense but
that is what it shows in system processes.

I removed the Dell Support software and it solved my problem. Mine seemed
to happen when the Dell Alert was launched. See if you notice that the icon
pops up at the same time the system "idles" to a crawl and CPU usage is
hovering at 99%.

System Idle Process is exactly what it sounds like.
It is the % of processing power you have waiting for something to do,
doing nothing.

If you are having problems, this is not the cause.
