I have tried twice from different computers to make a good
set of startup disks from Microsoft's download center and
each set ends up with a corruped file - last time it was
SP1.cab. Has anyone else run into this problem??

Hello
unless Im not uderstanding you, I think you are in
violation of patent rights. If so it may be the reason of
a failed attempt

Then go read:

For Windows XP Pro setup diskettes:

http://snipurl.com/4njc (with SP-1)

For Windows XP Home setup diskettes:

http://snipurl.com/5ph5 (with SP-1)

And answer why there is a violation of patent rights for a download provided freely by Microsoft itself. You'll still need the installation media (i.e., CD) to complete the install.

Sounds like you (terry, that is, not "anonymous" who can't bother to use a unique moniker) need to redo the downloads to ensure you have an uncorrupted copy of it. Or you need to try a different set of floppies since one of them is probably defective.

Yes, I have. XP is not so good with floppies, and it's taken me several
attempts to create a good set. If the floppy is even slightly bad, the disk
creation routine goes haywire. It's not very fault tolerant, so the only
real solution is to start again, and try to use new media.
