Whenever I run the ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery backup tool (for Thinkpads),
I've gotten the following error from the utility:
--
r2r.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x037dc601" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

If I stop the spooler service, this error does not occur. I also have another
Thinkpad where this does not occur running the backup tool. I am at a loss to
figure out how the spooler subsystems are different, since both Thinkpads have
essentially the same WinXP Pro software.

Any suggestions?

And the computers both have the same print drivers installed?

Are there any files in windows\system32\spool\printers?
well, i don't know if they all the same drivers, but theres nothing in that
folder. i tried deleteing all printers and running the backup again, but still
go the error. toying with the idea of running cleanspl.exe....but I'm wondering
if thats even going to make a difference after deleting all the printers I had.

deleting the printers does not delete the drivers. Do any of the once
installed printers have a ink monitor of some other hooks to the spooler?

Printers folder , File , Server Properties, Drivers
will show you the drivers installed

If you had a Canon, HP, Epson, Lexmark setup program to install the driver,
make sure you run the uninstall application for the driver

I do have an HP Deskjet 990. The other printers are work site printers (big
printers, I doubt they run inkjet tech). The work printers are Infoprint 20,
1140 and 1332 in addition to Xerox DocuPrint 180 and Fiery DocuColor 2000. Plus
a Fax.

Oh yea, there's also an ActiveTouch Document Loader, which I think Adobe might
have installed.

Well, I learned quite a bit about deleting drivers and re-installing. Turns out
I fixed a problem I was having with my default HP Deskjet 990c printer - I had
it configured on an LPR port (because it's on another computer) and you need to
uncheck the bi-directional communications else it "hangs" the spooler at startup
time. I always got around it by cycling the spooler job, so now I know why and
don't have to do that anymore.

None of this fixed my backup tool problem though. The error always occurs at a
PrinterService.dll hook in the tool, so I really can't figure out why. I have
another laptop thats almost identical to this one, and i don't have this problem
on that one. I've been comparing the printer registry entries and driver
size/timestamps to no avail.

PrinterService.dll is not a Microsoft binary. Is this one of the backup
tool files?
Yes, it is part of ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery.

I have 2 GB RAM in the failing Thinkpad vs. 786 MB in the working one. I did
have the same printers defined in both, although the list is different now since
I whacked them using cleanspl.exe.

For a short time I started seeing the same symptom on both Thinkpads, but it
cleared up on one, and I'm not sure what changed at the time. I wish I knew how
to chase this down further.
