We are experiencing an issue where as we have upgraded
the majority of our users to XP, whenever someone access
our main file server the access is slow to open up,
almost as if its trying to authenticate the user, once
open the drive is working fine. The weird problem is
that it only happens with XP. Our users with Windows 2000
do not have this problem.

any ideas on this would be great thank you.

could be a duff name server .... for example

if you are using either DNS or WINS for name resolution
you probably have 2 servers for this for resilience. i
have seen this happen before when, say, the primary WINS
server is 192.168.1.1 and the secondary WINS server is
192.168.1.2 but it turns out there is a problem with
192.168.1.1

this does assume the XP and Win2k mahcines have been
configured differently

do you use DHCP?

are you all on one subnet?

moot out ...

Moot, thanks for the reply, the server is on a different
subnet clients are all on the same subnet but different
one from the server. We use dhcp and accessing other
windows 2000 servers that are on the same subnet as the
server in question works fine. if you go via the server
name \\server or \\serverip the server comes up fine, its
when you first access the Share. the Share is setup as
everyone full control, but the Security is set to Domain
users Traverse Folder/Execute, list/Read. if you access
the share via ip or server name it takes about 30secs to
show. Now after it comes up its accessible fine, but if
you close out of the window for let say 20 mins or more
then it goes back to the 30 sec wait time. its like if
the server is authenticating and then caches your login
for x amount of time. Not sure let me know if you can
give any more insight thanks.

there's a think in XP which disconnects mapped drives is
not accesssed 15 mins. There is registry hack for you to
try but i can't remember it. I've seen it here before, so
you could search technet

moot out ...

you are just using 1 protocol TCP/IP aren't you? if you
have others like IPX/SPX or NetBEUI you may have binding
orders to sort out

moot out ...
