anyone have any suggestions as to a good search tool for winxp to replace
the OS's inherant search tool?

damned thing is horrible to use!

thanks

k

I use

Agent Ransack

and then I can be sure that when file doesn't come up it doesn't exist - not
like XPs stupid find file with text option that only searches a few file
extensions that it likes.

try disabling the search assistant. I find that this helps out immensely.

set the following registry string:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]
"Use Search Asst"="no"

If this doesn't make sense to you, google for "disable xp search assistant"
for better instructions.

I use Power Searcher v.1.45. The current version seems to be shareware but
someone may have a link to the freeware version.

WIN2K-STYLE FILE SEARCH
Run Regedit. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent
VersionExplorerCabinetState and add a new string (REG_SZ) called "Use
Search Asst" - set the value to "no" and you will have the classic
Windows 2000 files search utility with none of that XP categorized
nonsense, and you dont even have to reboot!
