Hello there, I have browsed through several posts here
(50+) without something that addresses the problem I'm
having. Here's my scenerio followed by key items:

I've installed a Dell machine with XP Pro at my office and
trying to get the PC on the network. The network is
behind a router (DHCP turned off, IP address 192.168.1.1)
and there is a Win2k Server which is the Domain
Controller, DHCP, DNS server (IP 192.68.1.2). Problem is,
DHCP on the PC does not get any info from the server, and
manualy putting in information does not allow it to ping
anything.

I have tried to uninstall Client for MS and reinstalling
the NIC. The RJ45 cable and DHCP/Domain Controller works
because I was able to get a laptop logged on to domain and
connect to the internet. The laptop was also able to
browse the internet without logging on to the domain (just
DHCP alone allowed it to get on the internet).

Details:

Domain controller/DHCP/DNS server works IP 192.168.1.2
Router works 192.168.1.1
RJ45 cable works, tested on laptop.
PC has fresh install of Win XP Pro
PC is unable to get on network with/without DHCP.
PC has been tried with a 2nd NIC card.
No software aside from XP Pro is on PC.

If additional information is needed, please reply to this,
I will be checking this thread often. Thanks in advance
for any light you can shed on this. -Russell

Also to add a few more things:

I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew but renew does
nothing and just hangs.

Also, when DHCP is enabled, ipconfig /all shows the
following IP and DHCP IPs
IP: 169.254.174.176
Mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP server: 255.255.255.255

I don't know where this information is coming from.

Hmmm..

Is the network port you are p[luggin into definately
working ?
Is the network card you are using in the PC set to auto
detect speed ? If it set to 100MB and plugged into a 10MB
port it won't work !
Does the PC work plugged into a known good working port
(i.e. where you plugged the laptop.)

If all these check prove no good, sorry, I can't help
without being there :)

Ok then here are a couple of suggestions that will get you moving. First on
the Domain controller you must add the laptop to the active directory. next
being you are using static ip's you must in your lan connection properties
set the DNS server of the domain controller as the only DNS server. Please
post ipconfig/all for the DC and the client. Once I see that we will talk
about what's next and how to join the domain.
