WinXP Pro Hangs at Desktop (Sort Of)

I have XP fully updated and the problem is that Windows
starts up fine and goes to the desktop quickly, but if I
try to open Internet Explorer or access the My Computer
properties the busy mouse icon will appear then disappear
and nothing will seem to happen. There are probably other
things that hang like this but I've only seen it with
Internet Explorer and Properties.

Other programs and Windows interfaces function properly
and do not hang. After some time (probably about one
minute) whatever I had tried to open at startup (IE,
Properties) will open and function normally.

At startup I check the process list and I notice that all
the processes running do not have a name under the
column "User Name" but after that minute or so the User
Name (My user name or "System") appear and everything
functions well afterwards.

Sounds like a background processes is trying to load and ties up the
machine until it completes whatever it is doing or times out,
releasing resources back to the system.

Sometimes this is caused by "spy ware" or a trojan program trying to
establish network connections. Make sure the definitions are current
for your anti-virus program and get something like Ad-Aware or
Spybot, Search and Destroy and run them frequently.

You might try:

click on start, then click on run (it will be one of the last
items on the right side of the menu). In the dialouge box
type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and then
click on the "startup" tab and see if there is anything
loading that you don't need or recognize.

Thanks for the reply, but this is a new PC I just built,
so there hasn't been much oppurtunity for virii, or
spyware to get on it. But in msconfig I disabled all
startup services and the computer seemed to startup fine
allowing me to get to IE etc. without that werid hang.
The problem is now finding out which of the many services
is causing this.
