O.K., done the "usual" stuff, i.e.. through hardware manager assured that CD
ROM was "working O.K.", uninstalled then re-installed the drivers, scanned
for virus. My system is a SONY VAIO. Any experiences or ideas from anyone
would be greatly appreciated.

No error messages, period. I just don't have read capability of any data
on the inserted CD. Also, on system refresh, the full compliment of computer
CD Drives (there are two) fail to appear....then at other times they do,
weird.

With the computer off and unplugged, open the case and reseat the cable
to the drive and the power connector. If this doesn't do it, swap the
drive out with a known-working one.

"NADA", there is no "error message"!!!!!!!!! Again, when opening the CD
Drive Window, there is NOTHING THERE....no files nor data noted.

Then do as I suggested previously - reseat everything and if that
doesn't help, swap out the drive for a known-working one. If you are
uncomfortable working with hardware and/or don't have a spare drive
lying around, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop.
Replacing a cd-rom drive is inexpensive and trivial to do.
