I'm able to use most of my primary applications, but there are key operating
files that are damaged. My power supply went last week and musthave damaged
some key files.

Before I format and start over, does XP pro have a repair function on the
disk? I cant determine which files are damaged and the symptoms are random.
For example, all the "services" loaded do not have a User Name, some show
error, other's wont load at all, Outlook and Word take 4 or 5 times longer
to boot, etc..

Thanks, -Bob

(maybe sp2 will fix this... anyone know when it will be available?)

a repair install will not disturb apps, there is an ms kb article on this,
ensure you repair not install

Hi Bob 1500,

Put your XP CD in the CDROM drive and go to start > run and type 'sfc
/scannow' (without quotation marks and note the space between the c
and the forward slash).

This will check the system files and reinstall damaged ones. You will
have to go to Windows Update and download hotfixes again.

Or you may order them for free, check this:

Good luck

I heard a rumor that using the original XP Pro install disk repair *after*
installing SP1 is bad news! Is this true? Does ms have an SP1 disk for
repairs?

Hi Roger,
(I use "Bob 1500" so OE automatically flags my posts)
Anyway, I was told by a computer store technician that putting the original
XP CD in after I've already installed SP1 is dangereous. He said it is
better to get the XP Pro SP1 disk from MS and use it to do the repair (as
you have indicated). Do you think he is overreacting? I think ordering from
MS would take forever.

Hi Bob 1500,

The problem with using sfc /scannow on your system would be that you
would have to download updates again, because the routine would copy
the files from the original, not yet updated XP CD.

It wouldn't be dangerous if you're protected with a firewall and
updated AV.

What you might want to do is order the update CD free from Microsoft,
wait until you receive it, then proceed with sfc /scannow and then
update using the CD.
