WHy did a fresh install, of WInXP Pro, onto mirrored SATA
drives (on a brand new built machine) install to the J
drive instead of the C Drive?

Am I going to have problems with this later?

The only problem I see now is that in WIndows Explorer I
do not see folder icons but that was fixed with
the "subst c: j:" command but then I have a C drive and a
J drive, in explorer, that are identical.

But now I can not add another IDE drive (from my old XP
Pro machine). Computer management & device manager sees
the drive as C drive but I can not access the drive in
explorer. Anyway to get the data files off my old hard
drive onto the new computer?

It's a feature. There is a microsoft KB arcticle on it,
although I can't remember the number. If I recall
correctly you can do something about it per the KB but
overall you are looking at a reinstall and you have to
make sure the drive you are installing to is the only one
with an OS or else XP will do it again....
