I am looking for suggestions on how to replace / upgrade my disk drive under
XP.
Basically, I'm looking to replace a 40 gb drive w/ 120 gb. At the same time
trash the older Win98 O/S.
I really want to avoid reinstalling XP and all gaming ware.

I had partition the 40gb in several 2-10 gb partition while running Win98.
Later I purchased the WinXP upgrade and installed in its own partition now G
drive. The PC is setup to dual boot. The 40 gb Drive is now at capacity
and needs to be replaced. I am looking for suggestions on how to migrate
/ copy / restore WinXP from the G Drive onto the new 120 gb drive without
bringing along Win98 and the underlying partitions supporting it..

My first thought is to create a backup of the G drive (and all other
referenced by XP) from the old 40.
After partitioning and formatting the 120gb and restore the G drive to the
first partition on the 120.
How will the WinXP registry be effected by the elimination of drive C-F.
Will XP make the adjustments?

Another hair brain idea: create the same number of (NTFS) partition on the
120 as there are on the 40. Then, lay down just the XP related partitions
onto the corresponding partitions on the new 120 initially. Will the
registry have any better change of remaining consistent if I use Disk
Management utility to drop C-F drives.

Any suggestion or recommendations are welcome.

Something like Ghost or Partition Magic might make the whole process easier.
Whatever you do, the drive letters have to stay the same from old to new, or
the programs won't work correctly.

In other words, you can't take a Windows XP installation that was on
partition "G", copy and install it on another drive as partition "C", and
expect it to work. It won't!

My take is that you will probably save yourself time by saving your data files and doing
a clean install. What you want to do can be accomplished with the help of both
Powerquest Drive Image 2002 or later and Powerquest Partition Magic 8 or later. But
after buying the programs and learning to use them...
