My sister in-law is running WinXP Home Edition and just
picked up a virus. Now all she gets on boot is a black
screen that says Windows cannot start because it is
missing the widowsrootsystem32ntoskrnl.exe file. She
can't find any kind of a "recovery disk" with her system.
Is it possible to get just this one file or does she need
to purchase WinXP again? Thanks

You should boot with the Windows XP CD and use the Recovery Console to
restore the ntoskrnl.exe file.

It is in the CD compressed as ntoskrnl.ex_. You must use the "expand"
tool (it comes with WinXP) to uncompress it.

Should your XP CD ROM do not have the Recovery Console, you can use
Knoppix 3.4 (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/) to restore the file. If
the partiton is NTFS-formatted, mount the NTFS partition using the
"Captive" tool (otherwise NTFS partitions will be mounted read-only).
