My son's in laws are French and live in Portugal. When
my son was out there recently he talked his mother-in-law
into buying a computer. It came installed (not
unnaturally) with the Portuguese language version of
Windows XP Home installed. His mother-in-law does not
speak Portuguese too well and wants a French version
installed.
I am going to visit in 3 weeks. If I reformat her hard
drive will the system discs supplied with the pc enable
me to install a French version or does one need to buy
the French version in the first place?

One cannot change the language version of Windows XP.
You must purchase the "Full French Version" of Windows XP,
reformat your drive and install it "clean". The alternative is to
create a dual-boot configuration which requires an available,
empty partition. You can purchase and use Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com) to accomplish this.

If you have a desktop computer, or a notebook computer that
will accept a second hard drive, you can install a second hard
drive and install the "Full French Version" on it and end up
with a dual language boot configuration.

Cannot Upgrade or Install a Different Language Version of Windows XP
