I have been trying to install Win XP Home onto a new HD, first partition is
NTFS. I have had a number of problems, one that keeps reoccurring is when I
get to the screen which asks
* Set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.
* To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console press R.
If I press either ENTER or R my machine just shuts down and restarts and
goes through the sequence until it gets back to that screen, so I could go
round in circles.
Anybody have any idea how I can stop this happening.
Bye for now

Assuming a clean install, install your previous operating system and when at
that setup's desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen
appears, select Check System Compatibility, the report it generates may lead
to the source of the issue. If your doing an upgrade over your previous
setup, assuming that is still bootable, follow the instructions above about
the XP CD.

It would help to know if you're doing a clean install of XP, an install over
a previous operating system or trying to reinstall XP as well as have some
information about your computer, Processor, ram, graphics card any other
details that might be relevant.

Hello Michael
Thanks for your comments. I have been trying to install XP onto a new
hard drive, I had made 3 partitions, the first NTFS the other 2 Fat32. My
machine has a DFI AD76 motherboard with AMD 1800 processor, 256 ram and
NVIDIA GeForce MX400 graphics card, sound and network are on board.
When I first tried to install I did get a "Page Fault in Nonpaged area".
As it suggested I disabled my memory cache, this allowed me to install the
program with about "4 minutes to go" ( with the memory cache disabled it did
take a lot longer than normal over 3 hours to that point) Then it shut down
and when for a restart.
I have a stand alone CD bootable Linux program and when I run it I can
see the 3 folders with the XP programs sitting in the first folder.
When I start up the machine without the XP installation disk in the CD
drive it installs to a point where it asks for file system32\hal.dll, I'm
assuming that this is one of a number of files that that did not get
installed.
If I start up with the XP installation disk in drive that I get what was
my original question.
Thoughts - can I reformat that NTFS folder but how? My DOS start up disk
does not see it and I cannot get to the partitioning on the XP installation
disk.
Any help welcomed, thanks in advance.

Before following the instructions below, if you have a different graphics,
I'd swap it with the current nVidia card as that card may cause XP setup to
choke. If you continue to have problems with setup while following these
instructions, you might want to make sure you have the latest BIOS for your
motherboard, you'll have to check the manufacturer's website.

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive, boot with the XP
CD in the drive. If it isn't or you are not sure, you need to enter the
system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter setup press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

A few screens into the boot process, if you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.
