Hi,

I have put in the Maxtor Hard Drive install cd and it
says it setup my hard drive with no problems. I then
reboot with Win XP Pro CD and I get the "Hit any key to
boot from CD...." I hit any of my keys and then I get
something like "System is now 'something' with your
hardware configuration..." and then the screen goes blank
(black) and nothing happens.

Any ideas pls???

Not enough information.
If this is a NEW PC, why do you need the "Maxtor Hard Drive install CD"?
Just boot with Windows XP CD and go from there.

Does your BIOS see the hard drive at it's full size?
Is it Serial ATA or other?

Hi Stanley,

I was in the BIOS and it saw that I had a Maxtor HD
installed but don't know about the size, if if sees its
full size. How do I check that?

Also, my hard drive is using a IDE cord and is the
slave. My CD Rom is the master.

Thx,
Chris

First, I would recommend the hard drive be the master in the pair. Not
necessary (for newer PCs) but just makes more sense.

In the BIOS, it should tell you the Cylinders/Heads/Size etc.. What is its
size there?

You are obviously set to boot from CD..

How about this - What is the Processor and Motherboard in this system?
How big is the Hard Drive?
Have you upgraded the BIOS?

Hi,

MotherBoard: Intel D865GBF
Processor: Intel 3.06 GHZ
Hard Drive Size: 120 GB (MAXTOR)
Upgrade BIOS? How do I do that when I don't have an OS
installed yet?

Thx,
Chris

BIOS upgrade doesn't require an OS on the hard drive, just a bootable floppy
diskette usually.

That motherboard should see the 120GB drive fine. Should not need a BIOS
upgrade (for future reference, you can download boot disks from
www.bootdisk.com and the BIOS for that motherboard from
downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=948 )

I would switch it to master, setup your BIOS to boot from CD, insert your
Windows XP CD and see what happens there.

It should boot into XP setup, you click next and I agree a few times and
then choose a partition to install it on - delete ANY that are there and
create a new one (unless you have a reason to create more than one) and do a
Quick Format with NTFS. Continue the installation accordingly. If the
machine is hooked to an Internet (high speed) connection, turn ON your
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) before connecting (unhook it during
install and have the firewall on BEFORE you connect to the Internet.) Then
download all critical patches.
