How come some of my picture thumbnails
are low quality b&w, while some of them are good
color?

We need more information to answer your question.

What kind of thumbs are we talking about? Where did they come from? What
is their resolution?

If you have TweakUI for XP, run it. Go to the Explorer section, then
Thumbnails. Move the slider down a notch or two. If you don't have TweakUI
installed, you can get it from
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp.

A manual edit is to click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Look in the right pane for a value called ThumbnailQuality. The default
value should be 5a. If its not at 5a, then double click ThumbnailQuality
and change it.

Thanks!
Worked like a charm.
