WINXP Home/Professional Network PING problem

Hi everyone,

Can someone explain this to me please.

I have a 3 PC network (2 WINXP Home, 1 WINXP Prof) behind a router with DHCP
enabled handing out IP addresses in the range 192.168.111.21 - 30. Each
machine has a name: 'nx9005', 'COMPAQ' and 'TIME'. nx9005 (XP Pro) is my
'server' and is always on. Each machine receieves an IP address within the
range.

I can ping any machine by number and everything is OK. However, if I ping
'nx9005' by name the output shows my fully qualified computer name
'nx9005.fred.net' with the IP address of 217.68.70.69. If I ping 'TIME' by
name, the same thing happens - TIME.fred.net and the same IP address
(217.68.70.69) as before, even if it's switched off!

Because of this behaviour I have to set a static address on 'nx9005' so that
the other machines can reach it.

What's going on?

Thanks for your time.
Fred

Typically workgroups computers do not have a fully qualified domain name so
I am curious as why you think your computers have fully qualified domain
names unless you have registered fred.net for yourself with a domain
registrar like GoDaddy, etc and have the dns records pointing to your public
IP. If you could run the command ipconfig /all on one or both of the
computers you reference and post results in a reply that would be helpful
also.

Hi
If all computers are behind a Router None should have an IP of 217,*.*.*
May be you want to explain your topology (the exact way every thing is
connected) better.

Jack,

Thanks for responding.

My topology is a Netgear ADSL modem connected to a Belkin Wireless Router.
'TIME' is hard wired into the router, 'nx9005' connects wirelessly to the
router. 'COMPAQ' is hard wired into a Netgear wireless Print Server that
connects wirelessly to the router. The router has DHCP enabled and is
handing out IP addresses in the range 192.168.111.21 thru 30. I can ping
successfully anywhere on my intranet by number but not by name.

I have now configured 'nx9005' with the static IP 192.168.111.10. Here is

Hi
Change the name of Fred.Net to some thing else.
By calling it fred.net it is going the Internet looking for a site name
fred.net
Even if there is no real fred.net it would end up with one of the commercial
Internet interception sites.
In your case http://217.68.70.69/ is resolving to http://www.webfile.com/

Your ipconfig /all shows that your computer is assigned a primary DNS
suffix. That will cause the computer to append fred.net to any "flat" name
resolution request and send it off to your ISP DNS server which will look
for hosts.fred.net on the internet and apparently some are found.

Normally a workgroup computer does not have a primary DNS suffix and "flat"
name resolution requests are handled strictly by netbios name resolution
using either a wins server, if available, or more likely broadcasting in a
workgroup environment.

Unless you specifically configured your computers to have a primary DNS
suffix in System Properties/computername - change/more then your DHCP
server, the Belkin router, is doing it and you should either disable it
from using fred.net or change ot to something like fred.local and your
problem will go away.
