Hi,
WinXP Home, SP2: WMPLayer 9 plays both sound and video in Admin or User mode
(MPG or WMV)
After installing SP3: WMPlayer9 plays only sound, not video, in User mode.
Plays still both in Admin mode.
Strange:both the old and tiny wmplayer2.exe and Quicktime player play videos
correctly both in Admin and User mode.
Upgrading from WMPlayer 9 to 11 did not help. reverting to SP2 not possible.
DirectX ok, as checked by a microsoft website. WMPlayer has all file
extensions checked.
Who can help to get my WMPlayer 9 behaving correctly with SP3?

Thank you, wincub

Sounds like a conflict with a bad / missing codec. You might want to
try updating your codecs with one of those "mega" codec downloads.

Thank You Downloaded WMDiag. Did not find how to run WMP, ran default,
received a message something like that "... error... WMI... may not run
properly..." and got a huge textfile. Could not find "wmp" or "player" in
it! What should I look for?

This is what I found when looking for codecs:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx
"...If you downloaded the Player yourself, the codecs that are in the
Microsoft codec package were installed automatically, so downloading the
package probably is not necessary and won't help resolve any codec-related
issues you might encounter. Instead, try the steps outlined in How do I find
a codec?"

But how can I find a codec when I get no error message "missing codec.."?
Strange, still, that in Admin mode everything is ok. Is it possible that
Admin has rights for an existing codec that User has not?
