WinXP hangs on bot without ext. USB attached

Recently cloned WinXP machine, loaded patches, etc. If I remove the
USB drive (ext) the system hangs about the point where the screen
'blanks' before the login screen appears.

If I power down and add the USB drive, it boots fine. WHen USB
attached, I do hear/see it being accessed at the above hang point.

any ideas?

yes - boots in Safe Mode.

think I tried boot log, but did not see the actual log file gen'd. is
that stored on root of C: as bootlog.txt?

Does it boot in safe mode?
or tried boot log mode, then checked what its hanging on?

Run Disk Management, and check the status of the partition(s) on the
USB disk.
