Last night I was looking at some web pages when system stopped
responding (not even Ctrl-Alt-Del had any effect). Now I just get the
apology, then splash screen and it reboots. Tried Article 307545 but
the hard drive is seen as an unknown format.
What would be the best way to try and recover all the files on the
drive?
What could have caused such a catastrophic crash?

I have reinstalled WinXPpro on a spare 3 gig hard drive I have. Took
out the 8 months old Western Digital 80 gig hard drive that failed.
Still have no idea why it failed. I would like to try and salvage all
the files that are on the drive. Any suggestions on how to proceed
would be appreciated.

You could try the recovery console boot from the Cd and choose recovery
and try to repair MBR
