Hello -
I recall this question being recently asked, but failed to save the answer;
apologies for a repeat question. . .
I noticed this evening that every single file directory on my WinXP Machine
is now marked as "read-only".
What lead me to this was a random check of Norton Anti Virus 2003, which
reported that it's Subscription Service was not installed.
After looking through Symantics' FAQs on this topic, I read that User/File
Permission Problems can be a cause of Nortion's Subscription Service to
suddenly de-activate itself.
I checked the Norton directory, and sure enough; everything was marked as
"read-only". I changed the attributes, rebooted, and the read-only
attribute re-appeared. So, I got curious and checked the remaining
directories on the hard disk to find them ALL marked as read-only. Clearing
the attribute is very temporary, as the read-only mark comes right back.
I've checked my permissions as Administrator (I'm the only user on the
computer) and everything looks to be intact.
I've also booted into Safe Mode as Administrator, with the same results on
changing the read-only attributes as above.
Is this the result of a Virus?
Thanks in advance for any assistance lent,
