WinUpdate Error Code: 80246002

Jose

After installing XP-SP2, windows update recommended
updating Nvidia Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce2 MX
200 driver. After a 10 minute download for 12.9MB patch,
update was not installed due to Error Code: 80246002.

Any clue?!?!?!

Thanks

As a general rule don't get driver updates for your peripheral cards
from the windows update site. Go to the web site for the card
manufacturer or to the computer maker if the card was part of an OEM
install. Were you experiencing any problems that made you think a
driver update was needed? If not, and the system was running fine then
don't update the driver.

I am not that happy with your reply and point of view but
thanks anyway.

For the record:

The new NVIDIA driver suite did not even start to
install. And I wonder what an error 80246002 means.

No malfunction so far with the driver from the original
XP CD-ROM but it lacks many of the functionalities the
old NVIDIA driver used to have.

I had to go through a fresh format and install, from
scratch, for an earlier attempt to do SP2 upgrade
rendered a conflict with NAV2003, it could not be
updated. Downloaded NAV2005 and it refused to install
too. Trying to fix all the stuff, I even tampered with
the registry following directions found at Symantec's
site and eventualy I got a no-way-out corrupted network
information.

Now, everything is fine except for the NVIDIA drive and
the NAV2005 which I'll be trying next.

Then get an updated driver from the nVidia site, just don't use drivers
from windows update. Far too often they cause problems.

Dear Rock,

You were absolutely right, the download from NVIDIA's
site came to the rescue. I am not sure if I had NAV2005
running with autoprotection on when I tried the update.
Anyway, it did not warn about it whereas NVIDIA's update
does so.

In what follows you can find the thread of messages I've
exchanged with the Microsoft support service, to reach to
the same conclusion as yours.

Thanks for your kind support too.

================== THREAD START =========================

Problem Description: Dear Benjamin,

Thank you very much for you time, your attention and last
but not least, the unvaluable and kind support.

The download from NVIDIA site as you have indicated
worked just fine!

Recalling the reported incident, I am not sure now if by
the time I faced the problem I had already installed
Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2005 in my system. According
to NVIDIA site instructions, anti-virus software must be
disabled before driver installation. I failed to notice
such warning from the version I downloaded from
WinUpdate. The version downloaded from NVIDIA explicitly
warns the user about this issue. I disabled auto-
protection from NAV2005 and the installation runned
smoothly.

By the way, the NVIDIA driver is very nice and worth of
the workaround. It adds a lot of functionality to the
desktop.

Thanking you very much once again, I would like to close
this messge with my most sincere compliments for such
support service from Microsoft. Keep it on like that!

Sincerely,

Jose Luis

Great, glad you got it fixed and thanks for posting back.

Unfortunately, this doesn't take care of the entire issue... The
NVidia update still is displayed in WU after the install from the
NVidia website.
