After installing the Spyware beta, everything worked fine.
However when some spyware was removed, the internet
connection mysteriously failed (no connection whatsoever).

I did get a default 169.x.x.x IP, but could not do anything
else.

It seems the Winsock LSP's got broken(?) which can be fixed
easily running winsockxpfix. After that all works well again.

Too bad MSAS leaves a broken internet connection behind.

I have had this problem on two machines already and
winsockxpfix is now on my memory stick.

Whoops - forgot:

Microsoft realizes that this is not the experience the customer would like
to have around fixing items that break the Winsock LSP's. Look for
improvement in this area.

Yes and its it not the MSAS that causes it, its just that you had something
in your LSP that the MSAS found and removed and you have to rebuild it. So
the MSAS is doing its job, you just need to protect your system better.

is the winsockxpfix a program that we can get somewhere,
or are you basically telling us to follow the steps
provided by microsoft to fix winsock?

Winsockxpfix is a third party free utility you can download. It is a good
and effective tool to fix this issue.

However, it isn't necessary, particularly if your version of Windows is XP,
Service Pack 2.

For that version of windows a simple command is all that is needed. For
earlier versions of windows that are involved in this beta, there is a
somewhat more complex remedy outlined in two Knowledge base articles, the
first of which is below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

I would expect that this "expert knowledge" will be better encapsulated
directly into the product in a future release, but I can't predict how this
will work.

Hi Kristen - Just to supplement what Bill said, here's part of one of my
standard posts which addresses this:

#########IMPORTANT#########
Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs below, download
both a copy of LSPFIX here:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

AND a copy of Winsockfix for W95, W98, and ME
http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip
Directions here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

or here for Win2k/XP http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Info here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Directions here: http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet connection.
If this should occur, these programs, LSPFIX and WINSOCKFIX, will enable you
to regain your connection.

NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the Run command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs. (You can also
try this if you're on XP SP1. There has also been one, as yet unconfirmed,
report that this also works there.) Also, one MS technician suggested the
following sequence:

netsh int reset all
ipconfig /flushdns

See also: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm for additional XPSP2
info/approaches using the netsh command.

Get winsockxpfix.exe at:

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Actual Download link may be hard to find on the page but
it is:

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/WinsockXPFix.exe

Another useful program for non XP users is lspfix.exe:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

I think both programs clean out unwanted lsps and restore
the file: Windows\System32\spOrder.dll

In antispy, Advanced Tools System Explorers Network
WinsockLSP there is a list of lsp files and it tells you
whether it thinks they are good guys or not.
