I have a hp notebook with window xp. A few months ago, I switched from dial-
up to dsl. It worked fine for the first few months, now it won't connect to
the internet. I did a ping and it said something was wrong with my socket.
I can connect from my desktop with no problem. Is there anything that I can
download to a cd or something to fix my notebook without taking it to a shop.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Try this...
From Start> Run, type cmd, then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press Enter:
netsh Winsock reset
Restart.
You may have to be logged in as an administrator.

It's a longshot, but you may be able to regain internet access by disabling
browser extensions. From Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable
third-party browser extensions." Re-enable them after resolving the issues
or if disabling them didn't help. Most browser extensions are legitimate and
useful.

Whether or not the Winsock reset helps, this problem can be caused by
malware (adware, spyware, parasites, etc.)
See these sites for help: (Note: You can download Ad-aware and HijackThis to
another computer and install them to the notebook via CD, USB stick, etc.)
