Mike

Every time I open IE Browser (V 6.0), I receive the
message "The Page cannot be displayed."

I have been told that I have a Winsock Error, as my
broadband provider said my system can ping a number but
not a name.

As a result I cannot go anywhere on the web?

How do I fix this issue???

Hi Mike - Well, you can try LSPfix. You'll need to find a "good" computer
to download with and then transfer it by floppy. If you can't get it any
other way, and your ISP will allow attachments of up to 200KB, email me
(demung my address) stating your email to use and your OS and SP level, and
I'll email you a copy of the appropriate one.

Read here with links: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/winsock.htm

Downloads:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm (for Win98 but with links for others)

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html (for Win2k, XP)

I downloaded LSPfix onto a floppy and copied onto my "bad"
computer (Windows 98). Didn't help. I re-booted but still
get the same responses when attempting to browse the web.

OK Mike - Try this. Open a DOS window and enter at the prompt "ipconfig
/flushdns" (without the quotes), then enter at the prompt "ipconfig
/registerdns" (without the quotes). Test and if this has fixed things,
stop here. Else,

Now IF AND ONLY IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH THE REGISTRY, open
Regedit and browse to this key if you have it (I don't currently have a copy
of Win98 installed, so I can't check for you).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]

If you do and it contains the following keys (not necessarily with these
particular values):

"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:0000012c
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:0000001e
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000078

then Export this entire entry for backup, and then set each of these values
to dword:00000000

See if that helps. If not merge back the .reg file you exported above to
restore the original values. Please post back with your actions/results.

I tried opening a DOS prompt and entering the ipconfig
commands as instructed but to no avail.

As to the resistry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscac
he\Parameters]

(Dnscache does not show up under "Services")
