A week ago a program named winset.exe showed up on my XP
Home OS. it shut down my antivirus and firewall(Norton
Security 2004). Spybot S&D found it and stopped it but my
Winpatrol still pops up wanting toadd it to my start
menu. What is it and how do i get rid of it. I am fairly
new to computing so still learning the ropes.

Looks like it first came out with Windows 95 and also 98.

This utility sets an environmental variable (such as 1 or 0) that can be
detected by, for example, a Visual Basic program or batch file.
Unlike the old DOS Set command, which works in only one process at a time,
Winset operates on the entire Windows global environment. All processes that
are started after Winset has run can see the changes it has made in the
environment.
