What is the purpose of using WINS?
Where can i find notes on setting, configuration & usage of WINS?

Wins resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses. The Windows 2000 Help file is a
good place to start.

WINS accept dynamic registration from NetBIOS clients, and then
resolves NetBIOS names to IP address.

Because clients contact it using IP it allows resolution across routers,
on different subnets.

By default, NetBIOS clients resolve using broadcasts and so without
the WINS server(s) it is limited to a single subnet usually.

NetBIOS is still necessary for legacy systems (Win9x, NT) and
legacy applications -- the most important legacy application for
most people is "Browsing", Network Neighborhood or My
Network Places.

The build-in help, search [ WINS checklist ]

There's also a good overview of WINS in TechNet and Microsoft's whitepaper
on WINS. See:
