WINS settings do not appear in ipconfig /all

I use my company laptop to connect to the company network from home using a
ASDL line and a VPN (using Securemote software).

I can access email and extranet, but not the servers. I have been told that
I need to enter DNS and WINS settings for this to work. I have entered the
addresses I have been given and double checked them. When I connect and run
ipconfig /all, the DNS settings appear but not the WINS settings.

I have compared the setup with an identical laptop owned by a colleague
(which has exactly the same latest build of Windows 2000). His does list the
WINS primary and secondary settings though. The only other difference on the
IPConfig output is that his says Node Type = Hybrid and mine says Broadcast.

I have tried talking to our internal IT guys, but they have been a waste of
time!

Any suggestions?

If you have manually put in the WINS server IP's in the VPN connection, then
they should appear in the ipconfig output. Does this behaviour also happen
when you are NOT connected to the vpn and you run ipconfig?

Another option is to force W2K to use the Wins server, which will involve
making changes to the registry...If you are brave enough, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters and
change the Node type to 8. This will force the laptop to ask a server first
and then broadcast. Reboot the machine and see if you can access the servers
once connected.

Oh yeah..also make sure that "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP" is selected in
your WINS tab.

Thank you for the response. Yes this behaviour happens whether I am
connected to the VPN or not.

I have been into the settings, and there are no options to enable (or
disable) Netbios over TCP/IP available at all (like there is on my Win XP
home computer).

Could this be the problem? How do I make these options available?

I thought that this might be a problem with your TCP/IP installation. But
after a search on KB and I came up with this article..
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255639&Product=win2000

Not too sure if this is relevant to your case. But for now you can try to
remove TCP/IP completely, reboot and install it again. If this is a company
laptop, I suggest you talk to your IT guys before you do this as they might
have put some restrictions in place. Look at the below mentioned KB article
to find out how to do this

Thanks for the links, and tried the suggestions. No luck!

I have noticed that when I look at the local area connection properties the
NetBios over TCP/IP options are visible and selectable. But still not even
appearing on the ADSL connection.

Very frustrating!

Hmmm..ok. How about removing your adsl drivers, physically removing the adsl
modem from laptop, reinstalling again and then creating the VPN connection
again from scratch?
