I have wins disabled when or should you use DHCP for wins resolution?
Trying to get win98se and winxp pro to work in a workgroup and thought
the DHCP setting might be part of the problem. Thanks!!

Yes you want to have a WINS server if you can (otherwise your PCs will have
to find each other via broadcasts)
Yes - your DHCP server should be providing your PCs with all of there IP
address configuration information including the WINS server addresses.

If you don't have a DCHP server or a WINS server then you will have to
manually configure all the IP settings on each PC and also ensure that they
can find each other by broadcasting.

So do I on the windows 98se computers use DHCP for WINS resolution? I do
not see a setting for that in Winxp Pro.....thanks

DHCP has nothing to do with WINS resolution.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - allows a DHCP Server to issue
your PC with all of the IP addressing information it requires. Such as IP
address, subnet mask, default gateway, WINS servers to use and DNS servers
to use.

WINS - Windows Internet Naming Service - allows devices (PCs and Servers) to
register their names and IP addresses with a WINS server. This can then be
used by devices (PCs and Servers) to resolve a machines (NetBIOS) name to
its IP address so can then perform some operation such as attaching to a
share etc.

I am not sure what you question means. Either you have DHCP doing the
config of your PCs IP addressing or you do it manually. Either you have a
WINS server and you are pointing to it to do name resolution or you do not
and you are doing name resolution by broadcasts.
