Hi, i would like to know opinions about to use a WINS
Server on the network, I am working with Subnets to
segment the network , i have a windows 2000 enviroment but
Microsoft doesn't recommend to use a Wins Server, it's not
necessary ???

Thanks any help !!

WINS server is used for NetBios names resolution. If you are using
Win9x/Me/NT clients on your network (down-level clients), then you can
benefit from WINS server especially in segmented network, as NetBios
broadcasts don't pass the firewall. In pure Windows 2000/XP/2003 AD domain
name resolution is wholly based on DNS service and thus WINS is not needed,
but Network Browsing (trough Network Neighborhood) still uses NetBios, so
you could consider WINS server if that functionality is necessary to you.

I understand you !!! That's the reason of my question I'm
working on pure windows 2000 but i have different subnets
on the network i want to isolate the browsing for
computers only on their respective subnets not browsing
all the network. I'm researching how to avoid browsing
between subnets that's why i ask to use Wins or not !

I don't know if you know how to avoid the comunication
between the subnet's master browser and the domain master
browser ?
Thanks any help !!!

Master Browsers comunicate trough NetBios boradcasts if you are not using
WINS server. NetBios broadcasts are normally blocked by routers by default,
so browse lists can not be exchanged.
