WINS IP Address

Presently, I am using Files and Printer Sharing for MS
Networks on my LAN, and after using a Security Check from
Symantec, I was informed that I had some open ports and
needed to reconfigure so that I would not need to use
NETBIOS.

I am willing to do this, however in order to do this, I
need to know the IP address of a WINS server. The problem
is, I have no idea how to find this address. I do
understand how to implement address into my system.

My operating system is Win 2000 Pro.

I have to assume that this address is not easy to find
since there is so much vague reference to it without
definite instructions.

Thank you for helping me.

Bruce,

If all your systems on the LAN are W2K Pro, you likely do not have a
WINS server since W2K Pro does not come with one.

Before you do that, though, look into setting up a firewall and, at a
minimum, closing the ports used by File and Printer Sharing.

Terry

I think they mean you should not expose netbios ports to the internet and that either
you need a firewall or it is misconfigured. If you have no firewall I prefer a
NAT/router device for a cable or dsl connection. The can be bought for as little as
$29 after rebates, though a better one such as the Netgear ProSafe SPI firewall line
will cost about $80. There are free firewalls available for personal use and Zone
Alarm works very well and is easy for novices to use.

A wins server would only exist only a Windows Server operating system. In my opinion
you have no need to disable netbios over tcp/ip on your internal network and if you
did you would no longer be able to use My Network Places to find network computers
and shares. --- Steve
