Hi,

I am using two computers accesing my companies VPN thru a
T1 connection, one running XP Home and one XP
Professional. Both belonging to a local workgroup (no
domain being used). All network settings are identical on
both machines.

Connection is done to a W2K Small Business Server. No
filters are used on the servers network interfaces and
assignment of IP-adress, DNS and WINS is done using DHCP
at the server.

DNS resolution works fine on both but when WINS comes in
only XP Home works. Using "net view \\server" produces a
correct list on XP Home but generates "System error 53
has occured. The network path was not found." on XP
Professional. "nbtstat -c" produces the same result on
both computers.

I appreciate any information,
Bjørn Hasselberg

Make sure that both machines are registed to either the same wins server or
to wins servers that are pull/push partens. But i dont quite understand why
is it nessecary to still use wins in w2k environment, as dynamic dns
registrations have replaced problematic wins operation (espasially in
complex vast networks).

Best regards

All settings are the same for both machines.

Using only DNS prevented acces for both machines, WINS
enabled it for XP Home at least....
