Anyone experienced a WINPOWER ATX 600W (20+4) power supply? I can't find any
info online.

I am considering a new PSU and case - see eBay item 110227853572. I like the
large fan on the side - appeals to my cooling approach, but I wonder about
noise levels. I have contacted someone who already bought the item in a
previous listing, so I'll see what they say.

Any thoughts?

WinPower is made by HEC (aka Compucase).

Found by using Google. "I can't find any info online". How much
effort did you expend to look, like doing a Google search
(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=+winpower++"power+supply"++manufacturer)?

I can see a power supply matching the description here. But I'm not very good
at identifying where stuff like this comes from. If you can find a source
of these at retail, maybe the price, or the weight, will give some hint as
to the quality. It's funny, that the "Buy it now" price, is higher than
the price of your case+PSU :-)

Thanks for those links. Obviously I did a google search before posting here,
but searched for "WINPOWER ATX 600W" and "WinPower". All I could find were
some Taiwanese wireless company and a load of shops selling Winpower things!

I tried the hecgroupusa.com site, but could not match the 600W
part of the description. There are many similarities, but
I didn't want to finger HEC as the source, because of the
logo displayed on the product. I'd be happier if I could
find the stylized "W" in some of the HEC advertising. The
available info suggests HEC was swallowed up, but who knows
for sure whether that is what happened. (HEC used to make
supplies for Antec, and I have one of those.) HEC also tried
to market directly, instead of just being a contract player,
but I'm not sure that worked out for them.

And like some of the manufacturers, sometimes there can be
differences in quality, across their product line. So
even if it was made by HEC, depending on the spread,
there may be good and bad product lines. If it was
considered a "value" supply, then quality may slip.

Here is a recent HEC, with the green "HEC" logo on the side.
The case finish is mirror type. The Winpower unit, looks
different than this. Which is why I didn't mention HEC in
my first post, because I wasn't sure.

Based on those pictures it looks half empty inside like the
generic junk from Raidmax/etc.

Searching for other wattage Winpowers, the prices also make
one suspect it's junk. Granted Winpowers could come in
multiple quality versions but even then, this looks like the
lower quality tier.

Find out who makes the fan, it is likely to be generic junk
and may have a short life and be impossible to economically
replace. I suppose if all else failed you could take a
sheet of thick black plastic or aluminum and make and
adapter to later use a 120mm fan if that happened.

Frankly, I would rather have a thicker fan than larger
diameter, then add 2nd or 3rd fan, and have them filtered.
A large 24cm fan cannot have good static pressure unless it
were so deep there wouldn't be room for the parts in the
case, or of course the case would need be especially wide.
On the other hand in a difficult environment and unfiltered,
so long as the fan bearing doesn't fail you can always use a
fan controller to reduce the noise levels, but the other
question is whether the metal is thick enough and has enough
folds to limit vibrational noise instead of acting like a
large drum. There are silicone mountings for 12cm fans but
for 24cm, you'd have to make one yourself out of some
rubber/foam/etc sheeting.

Winpower's are cheap and crappy PSUs. Avoid like the plague.

I have just installed a similar psu in my desktop this morning. The one I
bought was described on ebay as "PSU 650W Quiet Winpower with silent 12cm
bearing fan". When it arrived the dodgy wording on the box "Powerful and
Extremely Silence", made me wonder if I had bought a fake, but I don't think
so as I looked it up on the internet and found other places advertising it
with the same wording..
Installation was easy, though the hard drive connection is at full stretch
(probably because it is in the lowest bay). It is much quieter than the 5
year old 350W unit I took out. Could not be described as 'silent' but the
noise it makes is a gentle fan noise, no high pitched whine which I have had
in the past.

So far, after about 2 hours of use, I would describe myself as completely
satisfied!

Here's a review of a different HEC PSU, a 480W Ascot. It did OK but
not great:

www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/atx-psu8_3.html#sect0

Here's a picture of a 550W HEC WInPower:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/188/466935459_95912a7ee8_o.jpg

HEC's design quality varies, with the Ascot, Winpower, and Windmill
series being their better ones, their Orion series being their worst
and fairly junky, as this picture shows:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/189/466923434_756cf74cca_o.jpg

Notice that the capacitors and output heatsink are small compared to
those found in better PSUs of roughly the same power rating, and
there's no AC line filter (area in lower left with parts missing).

If a PSU has a large 120mm fan, its heatsinks don't have to be very
big, and even some of the best PSUs with large fans use only flat
plate heatsinks.
