Communicating between our old 98 machines using Winpopup
was very handy. Is there a similar feature in XP Pro? I
really want to avoid using MSN messenger and stay within
my network.

I have fond memories of Friday afternoon winpopup joke telling sessions.
Unfortunately, they got a little out of control and my boss complained to
Microsoft. As a result, support for winpopup was dropped commencing with
Windows NT.

Me too! Where I used to work at, everyone loved winpopup and used it so
much that it was distracting somewhat from the real work that was
supposed to be done. :) Now that we've moved to NT based systems
winpopup doesn't work, but there is a similar utility called winsent
that does work just like winpopup. www.winpopup2000.narod.ru

Hi,

The command line command NET SEND is what XP uses instead of winpopup. Go to
Start/Run/cmd and then type in: NET SEND /? and hit enter for help.

I know all about bet send Kelly. :) Most of the office users don't like
it though. They aren't as comfortable using the command line like I am.
So that's why I got the winsent utitlity. Did you know you can get the
net send gui by way of the computer management utility? I have and that
works but it's still a pita as I can't figure out how to make a shortcut
to that.

A lot of GUI WinPopUp replacers for Windows XP are available.
I'm using Bassline WinPopUp, http://basslinesoft.com. I like its file
transfer and predefined messages with shortcut keys.
If you prefer freeware, try realpopup.

At our office we use WinMessenger. Works with
all W9x, W2K and XP. It has very nice, "native" user interface under
Windows XP and drop-down list with users...

Try it from http://www.winpopup.com
