"winnt/system32/config/system" missing or damaged

How can I repair my system without losing all programs,
folders, docs etc.
No emergency disk available
When I boot from CD and choose to reinstall W2K it warns
that all above WILL BE LOST.
Note: I have a second PC avail and could temp-install
harddrive as a slave. What files do I have to overwrite
or copy to where??
