My daughter has asked me to install winmx.
Has anyone any experience of any problems with this software?
Is it adware/spyware/trojanned ... etc ... ??

All P2P app's are potentially dangerous for your PC. However, WinMX is
amongst the safest.

In saying that, I'd reccomend Kazaa Lite over WinMX as WinMX can be very
slow for downloading (even for BB users).

If you'd like to check out Kazaa Lite aswell as or instead of WinMX, you can
find it at;

Kazaa Lite (no homepage anymore, so the following link is a direct download
only)

WinMX

Nah, Kazaa (and the Lite version) are too often the target for viruses.
Use www.shareaza.com instead -- it's like WinMX, but far better.

Shareaza is almost the worst P2P app I've come accross (with the exception
of eMule, Ares etc)

Why so? I've found anything I wanted and always lets me download,
unlike WinMX which has too many queues, and Kazaa, which is notorious
for the way viruses are spread (some viruses are specifically written
to access your Kazaa folder and do their work through the Kazaa app).

i tried version 331, never got up/downloads
according to website, it needs source code manipulation to make it work for
dial up
i did not "manipulate"...

Dunno... I'm also using v3.31 with dial-up on my other box, no problems.
But I still think www.shareaza.com is a superior app. :)

Greetings...

WinMx itself works fine with dial up - However, most cable winmx Server's use a utility
to ignore dial up users... The result is that if you are using a dial up connection (a
secondary connection by definition) and you are unfortunate enough to connect to a
primary who is basically ignoring you - then you are basically stopped cold...

WinMx is much more configurable than Shareaza as far as I can tell...
Shareaza seems to be written for the downloader where WinMx is more for the Server type
sharer...

They both have crippling limitations that make them nearly useless for anything other
than music files... The worst of WinMx's is it's 5000 file share limit...

WinMx has no spyware, no adds, it doesn't install anything, it's completely free and has
a number of utility addons... It's a bit of a bitch to get configured correctly but once
it's up and running properly it is fairly robust... However it doesn't like to coexist
with FTP programs or servers and will spontaneously crash on you when running ftp
clients...

The WinMx network is fairly large, and you can usually find what you are looking for -
However like many P2P networks, you can almost track the sun by who is on the network at
any time of the day or night - and it can sometimes take days to get a particular file...

USENET is usually more reliable for finding better music....

I have over 12000 files shared.....via WinMX....so I have never run up
against that barrier

I myself share almost a 1/2 million files! It takes about a half hour for WinMX to even
start- because it checks the upload directories every time it starts...

The 5000 file limit is for the Browse list - I've noticed that people can still
download my music even though I have 150,000 books listed first... But it leads to some
interesting situations where people try to browse my list and thinking that I'm NOT
sharing my 150,000 music files plonk me into their ignore list - send me all kinds of
nasty messages and ban me from their silly chat rooms... All they really have to do is
read the very first file in the list (or the very last) which describes the limitation and
gives an address to my FTP site where they can download them directly...

It's a silly arbitrary limitation - something that should be configurable by the user -
not the programmer...

Which tells you something about the program itself...
