Friend has just installed XP on a new HDD. When he goes to System Properties
its reporting that the PC only has 56mb of RAM. However if you run WINMSD
(from a run command) it says there is 64Mb. The PC has 64Mb. Yes I know he
needs more RAM, but I know form my own experiances, XP runs better on an old
machine than win98 or 2k. We have tried some differnt memory and it does the
same

Can anyone tell me if System properties obtains its data in a different way
to winmsd. I am wondering if he has faulty hardware or a screwed install of
XP.

Any ideas??

Sounds like he has an onboard video card using system memory. Sys Props is reporting the available memory for programs (like XP itself) while the other is reporting installed memory.

Both are right.

Doh! Guess I should have thought of that, hard trouble shooting a PC thats
at the other end of the country! Thanks
