winmgmt and McAfee

Hi,

I have recently tested winmgmt through winmgmt/verifyrepository and
received the message that the repository is consistent.

I am having trouble getting Vista to recognise McAfee (anti-virus
programme). This is a recent problem.

My question is' Eventhough winmgmt is consistent, is it still
worthwhile running winmgmt/salvagerepository, or another option, in
the hope of fixing the problem'?.

Thanks.

PS. I assume that this problem will not effect the operation of
McAfee.

Any other suggestions also welcome.

1. McAfee is awful. Suggest you uninstall it and use a better antivirus. I
like NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (has a free version). If you want to keep
McAfee, then uninstall/reinstall. See if that takes care of the issue.

2. It is not normal behavior for an antivirus to simply disappear off the
map, as it were. Do a thorough scan for malware:

3. If the machine is clean and uninstalling/reinstalling McAfee doesn't fix
the problem and you don't want to replace McAfee with a better AV:

Do the following from an *elevated* cmd prompt:

net stop winmgmt [enter]
cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem [enter]
ren repository repository.old [enter]
net start winmgmt [enter]

Yes, I have another suggestion. In my opinion (and that of many of us
here) McAfee is the second worst anti-virus program available; only
Norton is worse. I recommend that you switch to NOD32, if you want a
paid-for product, or Avast, if you want a free one.

I use McAfee because it came with the machine and has three years free
updates.

Ps. If I change to Avast, would I need to unistall McAfee first, or
could I just leave it and see how I get on with Avast?

Whys is McAfee seen as so bad?

McAfee, along with Norton, are seen as bad because they are bloated, slow
down your system, extremely invasive, and not that effective.

Yes, you must uninstall any antivirus you currently have before you install
a new one.
