WinMD5 v2.0 is a free Windows (98, XP, 2000) utility for computing the
MD5 hashes ("fingerprints") of files. These fingerprints can be used to
ensure that your file is uncorrupted
http://www.blisstonia.com/shareware/WinMD5/
The URL says shareware but it is free
85k zip / 169k expanded.
I used WinMD5v1.1.zip and uzipped to it's own folder. Then in Win
Explorer drag n' drop your iso file or whatever to the box. Hi-lite the
numbers in the box, Ctrl-C to copy, Ctrl-V
to paste into the checksum textfile. That way you can line them up for a
faster (more reliable check).
Way faster than the Dos mode. Even though keep a Dos Checksum if you
need it.

FWIW, I use DVDSIG on all of my data CD/DVD burns

(fastest MD5 check/create that I've seen)

Easy MD5 Creator for everything else

After trying out many MD5 programs, I liked HKSFV (See
http://www.big-o-software.com/products/hksfv/ ) and graphical MD5 at
www.Toast442.org the best!!

Thanks. I've just wasted a couple of hours trying to checksum my
download of Knoppix 3.4 with half a dozen md5sum programs:

md5sum
md5sum2
md5sums
md5summer

Of these, the first and the second flash a screen and close before I
can read anything on it. Md5sum's help function doesn't explain the
problem.

Md5sums opens a window and shows a progress bar, THEN closes the
window and leaves no trace of the checksum for you to compare. It's
help file seems to suggest the output can be saved, but my imitation
didn't work.

Md5summer, which I picked up and tried today, after reading a posting
here, first says the the .md5 files are associated with another
version, should I associate them with md5summer. When I give the ok,
the next step is an "out of memory" popup.

Like you, I don't have MS .net installed, and am not keen to get it,
so I downloaded WinMd51.1, and it worked fine.

Personally, the best I've found is DAMN HashCalc is the best:
http://www.damn.to/software/hashcalc.html

It should be pointed out, though, that DAMN is a group which cracks
or provides keygens for commercial software, so if you don't trust
someone who does that, you probably shouldn't trust the app (although
I have never seen or heard of anything to suggest that the application
is doing anything other than calculating hashes).
