Why does windows mail take so long to do anything? Just switching from inbox
to outbox causes the cpu to shoot up to 100% usage. It is chronic, can we
get OE back?

Try compacting the database. Go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance
and set the compact counter to 1. Then close WInMail and let it compact.
Then open it again and set the value back to 100. See if that helps
performance at all. Also make sure antivirus software is not set to scan
email. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 which applies to WinMail as well.

Where do you find compact data Base in winmail? It is not the same as OE.
What is clean up mail button? I do not want to delete any email?

Problem solved. Opened OS in safe mode and tried to deleted contacts. Got a
run time error each time I tgried to delet all in folder so I deleted the
entire folder knowing that it would be recreated. Booted back up and opened
WinMail now it is as fast as OE. SO removing the imported contacts works for
this bug :) Importing them back in CSV format causes the same bug so we Will
need to add them back one at a time :(

You just quoted the instructions to do that.

webguy62 , this is the first fix I have seen that looks like it would correct
my problem of very very slow windows mail. Ever since I transfered my files
from my xp machine , it went dead or so slow I will be dead by the time a
reply window comes up. Can you tell me more on what you did , as I sure
need the help. As reading all the posts alot of people need help with this
windows mail , I loved outlook express for the last 9 years. I tried to get
help from HP but they had me backup my files now I have two backups and a
very very slow email program. Thanks

If you have thousands of contacts, it can slow WinMail down.
If so, improve the speed as follows: Tools, Options, Send, uncheck
"Automatically complete e-mail addresses when composing."
