People are sending me all sorts of attachments, from
WSWord to Excel, but they are showing up as winmail.dat
files I cannot open, or if they open it is in WordPad and
is very cryptic. How can I open a winmal.dat file to
show the original file sent?

WINMAIL.DAT is a proprietary Outlook file that allows Outlook users to send
Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) information (see Microsoft's
technical support article at

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q241/5/38.ASP.

This TNEF information is unopenable and irrelevant outside of Outlook.

Whoever is responsible for the Exchange server must configure it to use
standard internet protocols when sending email over the internet where
users may not use MS email clients.
