A friend of mine was apparently follow some advice in troubleshooting a virus, but she renamed winlogon.exe instead of the right file. I know she is running Windows XP Home, but I do not know her SP level. I also know that she only 'renamed' the file and what she named it to as she wrote down the instructions.

Can I pop in any botable XP/XPPro CD and enter the Recovery Console to rename the file back to winlogon.exe? If not, what steps do I need to take?

Why no make life easy and make a Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE)
bootable live windows CD/DVD from http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
You can access your hard drive using a program that works like explorer. No
need to type any DOS commands!

Thanks! I finally had a chance to take care of the problem and just booted on my own XP Pro CD and went to Recovery Console. Everything worked great, though I had a heck of time cleaning out the five viruses and 600 items related to spyware/malware.
