Hi all,

What ever replaced this program? Will it work with XP operating systems?

Regards,

Winfile.exe version 4.0.1371.1 works fine. Likely from Windows 95/98. I
don't remember where I got it from.

winfile is not included with XP nor will it work.

even though it was included with win98...even there it did not have long
file name support...so would trash long file names.

It probably should have gone out with win3x but admittedly I liked it
and even got a utility which gave it long file name support.

Now with XP you might as well just use windows explorer...
but if you google around...I'm sure there are plenty of other file
managers out there

Hmmm, I know winfile from win98 does not work with XP...
but the NT4 version may work...
Never thought of that.

According to Winfile properties, I downloaded the latest version, but there
was no help file with it.

Looks like Winfile is as good or better than Windows Explorer to me...And it
also resembles Vcom's Power Desk utility. I wonder why MS discontinued it?

I always preferred Xtree Gold or System Commander to Winfile.

Dosshell works fine too with full functionally on XP (or any NT) unlike 9x. This is because Dos command.com uses 9 character filenames and XP's command.com is Dos 5. 9x command.com (7.n) only support 8 characters. The 9th character was used to tell command that Dosshell was the program issuing the command.

Ha!...HP just sent me an e-mail saying that Winfile was a part of XP's
operating system. I thought that they would have known better than that.

From all that I have gathered, Winfile was a part of W95 and eariler
versions.

And later versions up to and including Windows NT4.0, Win98

I have W98se, but I never saw this program with that OS......I did see
Windows Explorer however.

Windows Explorer debuted in Windows 95 as a combined replacement for the
older Windows 3.x file manager (Winfile.exe) and Program Manager
(progman.exe, still works on XP SP1, but does not work with SP2).

It is wrong. Explorer is a namespace browser not a file manager.

Well, it is there after all.

Wonder how I missed it?....I don't remember seeing it in the start menu on
98se.

I have XP w/SP2 and it has worked for me too, but I didn't give it a
complete workout.

I like Power Desk better.
