When I use Win.Explorer to view the contents of a folder,
(My documents, My Network places, anywhere) the window is
always maximised. I've tried allsorts to make them
open "restored", but failed.
How ???

Right click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Explorer and click
properties. In the Run: box change the setting to Normal Window, it's
probably set to Maximize now.

Nope - the "shortcut" I open Explorer with are the ones
on the desktop, the everyday default icons, not .PIF's
or .LNK's that I have made.
There is no Run box such as you describe.

Nope. Tried that too.
Following a reboot, everything maximises again.
(No, I don't have a mandatory profile or any other
advanced stuff.)
