WinExp. Folder Options

Cannot get folders to open with "details" showing , always get "icons" Tried " Folder Options', "view" , "apply to all folders"
and clicked on "Revember folder current setting" All to no avail. Contacted HP support but they could not solve this problem. My last PC with WinXP Home did not have this problem. Any hel;p would be greatly appreciated. In addition when I open a window I always have to follow up with clicking on "Maximize"
 
The Default for Windows XP is to remember the view settings for the 400 most
recently used folders.

HP support but they could not solve this problem. My last PC with WinXP Home
did not have this problem. Any hel;p would be greatly appreciated.
