I have downloaded certain files that only WINDVD can seems to play. Some I
have managed to convert with VSO DixVtoDVD but other cause it to crash.

Any thought on a good freeware player?

Should you use the mailblocks package and expect a response from me,
you should preauthorize the dissensoftware.com domain.

I very rarely bother responding to challenge/response systems,
especially those from irresponsible companies.

You might want to look at Xenorate Media Player:

http://www.xenorate.com/?page=home&lang=en

I found the link at Nonags, but haven't tried the program. Still, it
looks like it might be a good one. Can be used as a general purpose
media player (including DVDs) according to the site.

:>Have you tried media player classic?

Working nice.

Even without new codec's.

Unfortunately, only Zoom Player Standard is freeware, "While Zoom Player
Professional and Zoom Player WMV Professional come in a Fully Functional
(uncrippled) trial version, requiring registration ($19.95 and $29.95
respectively)."

THe $ware that came with my graphics card has a real smooth fast forward
and fast reverse which is identical to what you'd see with a video tape.
But the program was never very stable and my system kept locking up when
I played a DVD, so I removed it. Does VIPlay have fast forward and fast
reverse?

Media Player Classic has it, but it's real jerky.

Sounds interesting... what was the app called?

How about

VideoLan (VLC)
http://www.videolan.org/

The VideoLAN project targets multimedia streaming of MPEG-1,
MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and DivX files, DVDs, digital satellite channels,
digital terrestial television channels and live videos on a high-bandwidth
IPv4 or IPv6 network in unicast or multicast under many OSes.
VideoLAN also features a cross-platform multimedia player, VLC,
which can be used to read the stream from the network or display
video read locally on the computer under all GNU/Linux flavours,
all BSD flavours, Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Solaris, QNX,
Familiar Linux...

Why would you be interested in a program that locks up every time you
try to play a DVD? Besides, it's not freeware and as far as I know, only
comes packaged with a new graphics card.

Thanks CoMa, but I did indeed try installing that program. An error
message appeared during the install and again when I tried to play a
DVD. In fact, I was unable to get the program to work at all. I tried
installing the program twice with the same results. I emailed the author
and included the error message I got.

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I get a chance. Also, I just found this
one while replying to another post:

Looks promising. Have you heard of that one or tried it before?

It too keeps locking up and the install also generates an error message.

Because it may have only locked up on *your* PC, which may in fact be
a shit PC and thus causing the locks up.
