A couple of days ago, my computer began shutting down right after it gets
booted up. I do not have any System Restore points on this particular
computer, so I decided to do a WinXP reinstall. The setup goes okay for
about 2/3 complete and then locks up. I can't get to the Windows Start
icon.

When I try to shut the computer off and reboot, it stops where it was before
(setup 2/3 complete) and locks again. I have tried hitting F8 and selecting
each of the options the options, but no luck. How can I get setup to
working or get out of it to Windows to save the many files before
reformatting and starting over?

You should be performing a "repair install". Make sure to disconnect all
hardware peripheral devices, except for your mouse, keyboard and monitor
before proceeding with the procedure.

You should have backed up your data first, but you know that.
Unfortunately, the usual reason for failure to install (and for the
symptoms which you have described) is a hardware problem. Reinstalling
Windows will not help if this is the case.

It may not be too late to rescue your data. I would remove the hard
drive from the computer and first try putting it in a working XP box
and see if you can copy the files that way. Alternately, you could
slave it in a working machine and if an installed XP can't deal with
it, boot with Knoppix. If Knoppix still can't help, there is data
recovery software. If all else fails, a professional data recovery firm
such as DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com) will be able to get the data,
but their services are not inexpensive. Only you can decide what your
data is worth.

Then I would troubleshoot your computer, starting with testing the RAM
and power supply. Of course, the failing hardware diagnosis is a guess
on my part since you haven't really told us anything about your
computer. I also can't guess at your skill level. If the procedures
I've described above sound daunting, take your machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigStoreUSA). They should be able to rescue your data and test your
machine.
